The Chimney Rock trail is a short and scenic hike in the Lower Crooked Wild and Scenic River. The hike includes views of the river, fascinating geology, and ends at a rocky outcropping (Chimney Rock) with a bench and a view. There aren’t a lot of trails in the river canyon, and this is the primary hiking trail. You will see plenty of people fishing on the river, though! Bring a picnic and enjoy sitting by the river after you have finished this short hike, or make a weekend of it and camp at one of the many campgrounds.
Style:
In and Out dayhike on trail.
Distance:
2.75 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:
+/- 700 ft
Trailhead and Permit Notes:
There are no permits required for day hiking this trail. If you choose to camp, pay any necessary campground fees. Similarly, you will need a fishing permit if you want to fish the river.
This trail is pretty easy in terms of distance and elevation gain, but note that there are some large dropoffs and cliffs close to the edge of the trail so it might not be suitable for all children.
Camping Tips:
Campgrounds dot the entire stretch of the Lower Crooked Wild and Scenic River. They are first-come, first-served, but I’ve never seen more than a couple of sites full! Chimney Rock Campground is the only one with potable water so come prepared.
