I love to squeeze in a couple of weekend trips at the end of summer. After Labor Day the crowds disappear and the air takes on a nice fall chill. This weekend we headed up to Yosemite for a nice easy hike along Lyell Canyon where we met Paige, T, Deon, Sarah, Barbara, and Kit at camp, which was situated right across from one of my favorite Sierra rest stops. Here the Tuolumne River flows over smooth granite into small pools and waterfalls – a perfect stop for a foot soak on a longer hike through the canyon, but this weekend it was our destination.
While we waited for the rest of the group to return from a dayhike, Dave and I fished the river. I pulled out countless 5″ brookies, so pretty with their orange and spots. I even got a small brown trout, but everyone was too small and thrown back. Luckily we met a friendly hiker camped in the site downriver from us, and he had caught a bunch of German browns, which he shared with us later that night in camp. Thanks Randy!
perhaps you hardcore hiking folk should have been car camping with us! apparently lake chabot is stocked with all sorts of fishies… we, on the other hand, brought sushi for dinner. (ok, same thing!). and s’mores!
