Uvas Canyon Waterfalls are Running!

I always love to visit Uvas Canyon after the first few rains of the winter season. The waterfalls start running, and the damp air brings out the greens, reds, and oranges in the foliage. The forest feels primitive, like I’m lost in some kind of fairy tale forest (and near the bad queen’s castle).

After last year’s dry spell I was eager to see some running water and Uvas didn’t disappoint. This is a gem of a park that’s a short drive from San Jose.

Here is how the park looks right now… (and if you want to see more, I have a full album from Uvas on smugmug).

Waterfalls!

Before I dive into the series of desert hiking posts I had to post a quick note about the waterfalls at Uvas Canyon County Park (west of Morgan Hill tucked into the Santa Cruz Mountains). Today was a perfect day to visit as the rain has stopped falling from the sky but it has most certainly not stopped tumbling down the creeks. We did a short loop hike past several waterfalls and only saw a small handful of people while we were out. Anyways, if you’re in the area I highly recommend checking out the park after a good rain. Holy waterfalls batman!

Uvas Canyon Waterfalls

On Saturday David and I dayhiked and geocached at Uvas Canyon County Park. This is a small park tucked away in the hills to the southwest of San Jose. It is a beautiful canyon filled with cascades and waterfalls. I thought of visiting last fall, but decided it would be smart to wait until the spring – waterfalls aren’t that impressive when there is no water flowing. It was a smart choice – with the rain that fell this winter the falls were all impressive. More impressive was the lack of crowds. We ran into a few families around the trailhead and at a couple of places along the trail, but for a bay area park on a sunny Saturday in spring, it was quiet.
