Bay Area Snow: Mt El Sombroso

Bay Area Snow: Mt El Sombroso

Last weekend I decided I wanted to hike in some of the snow that was lingering on the Santa Cruz Mountains but I didn’t want to drive up to it with all of the snow-driving-inexperienced crazies. So I did the next best thing – hiked to it.
I chose a trail I’ve hiked many times, starting at the small Kennedy Road trailhead to Sierra Azul (in Los Gatos) and climbed up to El Sombroso, a peak just east of Umunhum. I expected maybe a light dusting of snow, but ended up breaking trail through about eight inches of it during the last stretch to the summit. My memories of this trail are usually of hot and miserable slogs (yeah, I still like it though), but hiking it in the snow was a completely different and beautiful experience. Fun!
On another note, I’m working on a redesign of the site so it’s a bit quiet here on the front end while I tinker on the back end. I hope to be back to normal soon.

I love your site! I’ve been waiting a year for your gear of the year 2010 report. What gives? My future gear purchases hang on your recommendations!

Ahhh! I never got around to finishing that one, too many things on my plate. Maybe I’ll publish it as the Gear of 2011 Q1″ report. 🙂
