Big Announcement

You may have noticed it’s been a little quiet around here lately. It’s not that I’m not having adventures, I just haven’t been able to find the time to write about them. All of my spare brain power has been spent on one big project: relocation to Bend, Oregon!

When?
Soon! We have been spending time in Bend looking at homes and finally have had an offer accepted. In the coming month we will be going through the normal home purchase steps – inspection, appraisals, lining up financing, etc. If everything goes as planned, we will move at the beginning of June.
We also have to coordinate the sale of our home in San Jose, so my head is spinning a bit right now!

Why Bend?
Bend has always been a favorite place of ours. In many ways it is a twin of my beloved hometown of Traverse City, Michigan. The energy, the people, the culture, it is all very similar. But Bend has the mountains and access to the outdoor activities I grew to love during my time in California. Furthermore, it is a place where we can get a large property where David can expand his blacksmith shop. Today he works in our attached garage. I’m looking forward to him having his own separate shop!

Will you be working?
I will continue to do the work I do today (Software Product Manager). I work remotely, so I am not tied to a particular location. I’ll have to get used to flying out of a smaller airport when I travel, though. Having a major international airport nearby is a luxury I will lose in Bend.

What Happens to Calipidder.com?
I have had this site since the early 2000s. I built it to share my photos and stories with family back home in Michigan after I moved to California. Once we’ve settled in, I’ll have to think about how I carry this site forward. Do I start something new up there? Do I continue to share adventures here?
For now, I’ll be keeping the site on hiatus while I coordinate this logistical nightmare (how many people do you know that have had to move not one, but TWO anvils?) Once I catch my breath and start exploring, I’ll be back!

Congratulations to you guys! That’s so exciting!
(I totally feel you on the blog hiatus thing; mine is on unofficial hiatus while I coordinate my own move, lol)

    1. Thanks! You and Sprocket should come visit. The property has two small irrigation ponds, maybe Thor can finally learn to swim. 😀

I can’t think of a nicer place to live. We go for a week or two every year, and will be there June and September this year.
Please don’t let calipidder.com go away. I think it’s a valuable resource. I hope you continue your documentation of the great outdoors from your new homebase.

    WOW!
thats great for you guys! sounds exciting for sure.
i’d love to move somewhere where i can get a large workshop for my ceramics! envious 😉
i’ve enjoyed this blog so much-and it has presented such an amazing amount of beta for my own adventures that has been invaluable.
    i look forward to Bend-ipidder? Ore-pidder? 😉
    all the best up there

  4. I moved to Reno from Sacramento just in January 2015. I got into contact with the Meet-Up groups to mainly do evening hikes. While my health seems to have deteriorated, I hope to get on more peaks. Bend is a cool town, with lots of things to do. Though this last Reno winter has taken a toll, I have it nicer where I now am, with peaks, trails, and scenery all about me. Good luck on your move!

Been following/stalking your move on IG. So jealous. We’ve been dreaming of getting a place in Bend at some point (tho I’m not sure they’ll let anybody else from Socal in :). You must keep the blog going, just transfer the content to Oregon. Would love to read about your outdoor wanderings up there. Best of luck!

I was just reviewing my own Sierra Bucket List, after returning from 6 days along Hwy 395, as well as reviewing your “Circle of Solitude” trip. Curious when you might start blogging cool places in Oregon (hikes, not just breweries!) I need some enticement to visit Bend next year…I’ve never really considered anything beyond CA and western NV for a summer roadtrip. So much to see!
