Gear Giveaway! Andrew Skurka’s Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide

I have three – count em, THREE – copies of Andrew Skurka’s new book, the Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide (details in this document here) to give away to Calipidder.com readers!

This book isn’t just a rated list of current gear like you’d find in a magazine, it’s all about how to choose the right gear for you. I picked up a copy (mine is even signed, nyah nyah) at the Outdoor Retailer show in January and have been thumbing through it ever since.

The book is well organized and nice to look at with many full color photos, charts, and plenty of advice to help you fill your backpack with the best gear for YOU. I see two really great audiences for this book: first, the novice backpacker who is overwhelmed by the choices at their local REI, and second, the experienced backpacker who is looking to upgrade their outdated kit. That said, it’s a great refresher for anyone who likes to hit the trail with a backpack on their back.

So, how can you win one of the three copies? Anyone can enter using one or all of the following methods.

1. Leave a comment on this post about the next piece of gear you’re expecting to buy/replace and why.

2. Share this post on your own Facebook profile.

3. Tweet a link to this blog post using the hash tag #calipiddergear

If you do all three, you get three chances. Two = two chances, and so on. You’ll have a bit over a week to enter since I’m going to be out of town. I’m closing the door to entries on Wednesday, April 4, at noon Pacific Time.

I’ll draw three winners by random and post the winners here, on Facebook, and on Twitter. It’ll be your job to contact me (via the handy contact link on this website) to verify your entry and shipping address.

Good luck!

Well…I bought a lightly used backpack from a friend without really being sure it’s a good fit for me. Perhaps this book will help me find out!

Tired of schlepping a water filter around, and the whole laborious procedure of connecting hoses, etc, so next purchase is definitely a Steri-Pen.

Numerous upgrades as I am hiking the JMT this summer – gonna take 30 days and go off trail and do paintings – need to lighten my load! Definitely a new pack, maybe a new bag, definitely a new sleep pad, maybe kitchen kit, likely a tent. Its overwhelming actually. May want to hire some consultation. Do you work for beer and a steak?

Undoubtedly, the next piece of gear I buy will be footwear. Following foot surgery in June 2011, followed by 4 months of hiking detention, my foot geometry has dramatically changed. Shoes that once fit, no longer do so. Soles that once provided sufficient support, leave my foot achy by day’s end. Seeking the elusive lightweight, solid/sturdy and sticky sole, supportive shoe!

Lastest piece of gear bought, a tiny steel/striker 0.3oz $3 from the boy scout section – will replace my heavier more $ LMF. Pretty excited when I found :-)
Next wish gear a new shelter. Would like the MLD mid. To lighten my pack and to have better rain protection. But, have to save many more pennies :-)

My next piece of gear that I need to get is a 1 man tent for my Appalachian trail thru-hike.

My next gear purchases will all revolve around outdoor climbing! I think I need to get myself a good helmet first!

I have my eyes on a set of mountaineering boots and crampons for some summits this summer.

My next piece of gear to buy is a hydration bladder. I just had to toss my camelback, so I’m looking into other options now, I need one soon though.

I wish I had this book a few months ago before I started planning my PCT hike. I leave in 5 days for the trail….maybe when I get back I will have a new book sitting here for me to read. Thanks for the contest.

      Good luck! Enjoy the PCT!

I will be replacing my ground sheat with tyvek. The one I used last year is worn from 120 plus nights in the woods

I have been so incredibly interested in getting this book. It would be so sweet to win it. In a few weeks, I’m getting some time off and I will be shopping for some more ultralight gear.

Have updated a lot lately, but am interested in UL packs, so that would be the next big thing.

The latest thing I’ve purchased is my very own bear box (finally!). The next purchases will be upgrades to my kitchen: some new Platypuses and/or collapsible water bladders for camp.

Next piece of gear is some new Smartfeet. I am already burning through my first pair and I need to keep my feet in shape to keep me in shape!

Bought a backpack from Amazon because it had decent reviews and was cheap – turns out I should have just gone to a store and tried out all the backpacks they had so I could see how they actually felt on my back. My current one is not very comfortable for me.
