Lamont Peak

Lamont Peak is a small peak in the Southern Sierra near Owens Peak Wilderness, with a trailhead accessible from highway 178 via a short 6 mile drive on graded dirt road. It is probably the easiest peak on the Sierra Club SPS list. There is a trail all the way to the top, and although it is steep, not well maintained, and difficult to follow from time to time, the route is straightforward and non-technical.

It was a perfect hike to break up our long drive back to the Bay Area at the end of the Memorial Day weekend. The trail starts of harmlessly enough with a gentle grade, but 1/4 mile in it gets steeper and the grade only got worse over the next mile. Finally, about a mile in, we crossed over the shoulder of a sub-peak and contoured along the backside on a narrow trail.

Keep your eye on the skies – we watched several military aircraft performing refueling exercises.
