Summer Backpacking Plans
After last weekend’s backpack in 100 degree heat and the opening of Tioga Pass, I officially declare Summer Backpacking Season open. Looking at my calendar, it’s chock full of awesome trips over the next four months and I can’t wait to get things started. This summer includes plans for all of the following:
- High Sierra Trail
- JMT from Tuolumne to Red’s Meadow
- Lollipop Loop over Lamarck Col and into Evolution Basin with some offtrail stuff in McGee Lakes Basin
- Desolation Wilderness trip out of Loon Lake
- Sam Mack Meadow area
- Several Yosemite overnighters (Buena Vista Peak? North Rim? Mt Conness? Lots on the list!)
- Something in Emigrant Wilderness
That’s just backpacking - it doesn’t include the other outings, like this weekend’s visit to the East Sierra for some hot springing and car camping, or the fishing and peak bagging plans. It’s my favorite time of year!
So, what trips do you have planned? Am I going to run into anyone out there on these trips?

I’ll be soloing the JMT Aug 28-Sept 13… I’ll introduce myself if I see you — Have fun!
Wow, that’s a great list. I wish I had the time to do half that many. Oh well, doing what I can. Maybe I’ll run into you in DW. That’s one place I’m definitely going to make the time to explore a bit this summer.
Sounds like a fun list; mine include
Tuolumne Medows to Yosemite Valley 6/6 -6/9 then car camp the rest of the week
Mount Williamson & Mount Tyndall 72 - 7/6
North Rim Trail in Yosemite sometime late in August or early September.
It would be a treat to meet you out on the trail somewhere, Calipidder!
