Henry Coe Backcountry Weekend: Mississippi Lake and Bear Mountain

Me near Mississippi Lake

Once a year, Henry Coe State Park opens up the gate to the remote and less-traveled east side of the park, including Orestimba Wilderness. This Backcountry Weekend allows people to get in to the areas that would normally be accessible only by a minimum of a (long) full day’s hike, and that doesn’t include the exploration you would want to do once you get out there.

Passes for the Backcountry Weekend are available via a lottery process that begins in February, and the weekend usually falls at the end of April, prime time for enjoying the green and the wildflowers before the park gets painfully and dangerously hot.

Enjoying a perfect Bay Area weekend

This past weekend was a perfect one to get out on the trail. The parks are still green, the wildflowers are peaking, and the weather was absolutely beautiful. I chose to spend Saturday morning up at Russian Ridge, and then during yesterday’s record highs I headed over to the redwoods of Big Basin to stroll through the cool shaded forest along the relatively untraveled Whitehouse Ridge Trail.

Most of the photos I took were of the wildflower variety – it’s hard to resist them right now. But the views from the trail in Big Basin towards the Pigeon Point lighthouse and Ano Nuevo were also stunning.

Linkee goodness:

Lava Beds National Monument Easter Getaway

David in Tickner Cave
David in Tickner Cave

I’m going to let you in on a secret. It comes in two parts. The first is this: Lava Beds National Monument. The second part is this: Easter Weekend.

Lava Beds sits just south of the California/Oregon border. The nearest town big enough for a Walmart is Klamath Falls, Oregon, about 40 miles to the north. Getting to the park from the major population centers of California involves a long, long drive, made even longer in winter by closure of the southern route due to snow. It is surrounded by horseradish farms, the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and the flanks of the enormous Medicine Lake Shield Volcano and related lava flows.

Lava Beds offers a unique experience. The main attractions are the hundreds of lava tube caves formed by the different flows off of the Medicine Lake Volcano. The labelled caves on the Lava Beds park map are generally developed. This means that they have ladders, cleared sections through the jumbles of rock, or walkways. They do not have lights – bring your own! The backcountry caves, however, are not developed and usually require a bit more scrambling or technical skills. Lava tubes in general are fairly easy to navigate, so advanced caving skills are not usually needed. Good lighting, head protection, and a lack of fear of the dark and tight spaces are the most important things to have in a lava tube.

More Wildflowers at Sierra Azul

I continued my spring obsession with wildflowers and hiking last weekend at Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve. A friend of mine has the through hiking bug, deciding to complete the entire Bay Area Ridge trail. Of course he can’t count the ones already done, so we started from scratch with one of the longest stretches, from Lexington Reservoir to Hicks Road. This is the stretch through Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve.

In addition to a nice 12 mile hike through the park and over Mt El Sombroso, we were able to see several wildflowers in bloom – more than I expected to see at Sierra Azul.

Bay Area Wildflowers

I can’t believe I forgot to post an entry on this, but a very kind comment I received yesterday spurred me to action.

Last weekend I visited two local parks that are right now known for their wildflower displays: Harvey Bear Ranch (east of Morgan Hill) and Santa Theresa County Park in south San Jose. The key word there is ‘wildflower’ so I won’t continue typing – rather I’ll point you to the photos. If you’re in the Bay Area this weekend and looking for a nice place to see the flowers, I’d recommend either park.

I think I’m going to check out Sierra Azul this weekend.
